IRS Tips: 5 Ways to Spot a Scam Phone Call

Scammers impersonating the IRS use aggressive tactics to frighten taxpayers into paying fraudulent debts. Here are five red flags that should immediately alert you to a scam:

  1. 1

Call you about taxes you owe without first mailing you an official notice.

The IRS always sends official correspondence through the mail before calling. If you receive a call about taxes without a prior mailed notice, it is almost certainly a scam.

  2. 2

Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the chance to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

Real IRS agents will explain your rights and provide opportunities to appeal the amount they say you owe.

  3. 3

Require you to use a certain payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

The IRS never requires specific payment methods. Prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, and gift cards are common scammer tactics.

  4. 4

Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

The IRS does not request sensitive financial information like credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

  5. 5

Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying.

The IRS does not threaten arrest. Real IRS collection actions follow strict procedures and never involve local law enforcement for unpaid taxes.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Call

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, DO NOT provide any information and DO NOT make any payments over the phone.
